Woman Sesame Oil Maker

Winner of both the Golden Bear and the Film Critic's Award at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival, WOMAN SESAME OIL MAKER is written and directed by Xie Fei, who mentored internationally acclaimed filmmakers such as Chen Kaige (FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE) and Zhang Yimou (RAISE THE RED LANTERN) at the Beijing Film Academy. Xiang is a long-suffering middle-aged woman who runs a modestly successful sesame oil manufacturing business in a rural village. She works from dawn till long after dark, while also caring for a drunken husband and a mentally handicapped son. An upswing in the fortunes of her business gives her hopes for a better life, but true happiness proves elusive. Less known than the celebrated Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, which includes those listed above, Xie Fie is a filmmaker of considerable depth and power, whose work deserves to be seen outside China. ...
