To create The Earth from the Air, the world-renowned aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand worked for more than five years, flying over sixty countries on every continent. His purpose was to provide a record of the world's environments as a benchmark for the future.

What kind of Earth will future generations inherit ? How can we preserve the heritage of natural abundance that we share with past generations ? These are the questions that propelled Arthus-Bertrand on his mission. Often taken from low altitudes, the images reveal people, animals and many other details that make a vista come alive.

The photographs are described and interpreted by a team of specialists who provide background information in many fields including history, sociology, environmental science and geography. Using the images as a window on the Earth, this fascinating book explores the state of our planer at the time of a new millennium.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a world-famous photographer especially well known for his aerial photography. As a young man, he managed a nature reserve in the centre of France. At the age of thirty, he moved to Kenya with his wife to study lions in the Maasai Mara Reserve. His first photographic book, Lions (1983), resulted from this experience. In Africa, he also discovered the beauty of the world as seen from a balloon.

Upon returning to France, Arthus-Bertrand became a professional photographer. He has followed ten Paris-Dakar races with his camera and has also continued his work with animals. Aerial views are a dominant element in his work, and in 1991 he founded the Altitude agency in Paris. He has published many books, including Greece from the Air (1997), New York from the Air (1998) and Good Breeding (1999). His work has appeared in many magazines, including National Geographic, Life, Geo and Paris Match. He lives in Paris.
